When the Big Ball Drops

When the big ball drops…
Signalling the end of another day, another year, another decade, I will relish the opportunity for new beginnings, knowing that journeys are travelled one step at a time and that lives are lived from one day to the next, each day bringing with it the chance to begin again.

When the big ball drops…
I won’t dwell on the many smaller balls that I have in the air, each one representing areas of life that need constant attention. Each one signalling failure when they come crashing down. Rather, I will understand that some of those balls can bounce while others will shatter as they hit the floor, and I will purpose to remember this as I juggle them all and as I decide which ones I need to catch and which ones I can let fall.

When the big ball drops…
I will not allow my plans for the future to take precedence over the moment that I have right now. I will not dwell in the realm of ‘someday’, but I will acknowledge that while some days will bring more than their fair share of work and hardships, each day I must make time for rest and for play.

When the big ball drops…
I won’t make it about expectations. I won’t make it about perfection. Rather, I’ll make it about grace. Grace when I fall short. Grace when I miss the mark. I’ll make it about forgiveness, knowing that I am worthy of another try, even if I have to try again and again.

When the big ball drops…
I will remember that it’s not about the ball. It’s not about the date. It’s about hope. Hope for a better tomorrow. Hope for a better me. It’s not about outstanding resolutions. It’s about an inner resolve to persevere despite many obstacles and shortcomings.

When the big ball drops…
I’ll remember that it will drop again next year, and the year after that. And that each day in between is another day which heralds the promise of something new.
New grace.
New opportunities.
New beginnings.

When the big ball drops…
I will lift my eyes to the sky in gratitude for how far I’ve come and I will celebrate this fact notwithstanding how far I have yet to go.

When the big ball drops…
I will choose to see that sometimes, things must fall before something new can begin…and then I will begin anew.
